DESCRIPTION:Being Children of God \n\n\n\nOne of the most graphic\, and gratifying\, names for us as Christians in the New Testament is “children of God.”  \n\n\n\nJohn 1:12 – “…to all who received him\, to those who believed in his name\, he gave the right to become children of God…” \n\n\n\nRomans 8:16 – “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” \n\n\n\nBut our being children of God is not limited to the literal phrase “children of God.”  Being children of God is found in other verses in other descriptions: \n\n\n\nJesus taught the disciples to pray\, “Our Father…”  Having God as our Father assumes we are His children. \n\n\n\nJesus confronted Nicodemus with this truth\, “You should not be surprised by my saying that\, ‘you must be born again.’  The wind blows wherever it pleases.  You hear its sound\, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going.  So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”  Being a Christian means we have been “born again” and children are born. \n\n\n\nPaul understood the work of the Spirit in us to the extent that we could cry\, “Abba\, Father.”  Abba could be translated “daddy.” \n\n\n\nIn quoting from II Samuel\, Paul recorded the words of God in II Corinthians 6:18\, “’I will be a Father to you\, and you will be my sons and daughters’\, says the Lord Almighty.” \n\n\n\nGalatians 3:26 – “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus…”

DESCRIPTION:ARE YOU ANTI-CHRIST OR PRO-CHRIST? \nWhat do you think is the greatest need of mankind? \n\nProbably most of us would say God.  There is a need for revival and an awakening spiritually around the world.  But others might say…\nPeace\, because all we hear today are wars and rumors of wars. \nLove among our fellow men\, because it is not just nations and religions who do not get along\, but neighbors\, families and friends are at one another’s throats.\nEducation\, because the lack of knowledge keeps people from advancing in society\, finding a sustainable job\, or being satisfied with life.\nGood leadership\, because we all need trustworthy leaders out front\, we all crave for heroes who set a standard higher than where we are\, and without leaders the chaos of the mob will take over.\nMoney\, because that seems to be the bottom line with almost any solution we talk about in the world.\n\nI think the Apostle John would say that the greatest need of mankind is to know the truth about Jesus Christ. \njohn has been giving tests so far in his First Epistle to reveal those who are genuine believers and those who are not: \n\nThe test of living – I John 1:6 – “If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness\, we lie and do not live by the truth.”\n\n\nThe test of loving – I John 2:9 – “Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness.”\n\n\nThe test of not loving the world – I John 2:15 – “If anyone loves the world\, the love of the Father is not in him.”\n\nThis Sunday we come to a fourth test – the test of knowing the truth – I John 2:21 – “I do not write to you because you do not know the truth\, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.” \nA key to understanding First John is recognizing that these tests are gone over time and time again by John throughout the epistle.  He will say in different words that we are to live godly lives\, love one another\, don’t love the world\, and know the truth. \nAnd in this passage the emphasis is on TRUTH. . . and it has to do with Jesus. \nAre you anti-Christ or pro-Christ?  I bet you will be surprised about how John talks about this.

DESCRIPTION:LOVING THE WORLD \n\n\n\nWhat do you love? \n\n\n\nIf someone from another country came to follow you around every minute of every day for a month\, at the end of that month of observation\, how would they answer this question about your life\, “Joe\, Sam\, Jane\, Sally really loves ____________.”  What would fill in that blank for you?  God\, the church\, the needy\, the lost\, the Bible\, Jesus\, prayer\, worship…your family\, your children\, your community\, your jobs\, your school\, your country…your house\, your cars\, your boat\, your yard\, your money\, your stuff\, your leisure time\, your football team…your health\, your golf\, your pickleball\, your exercise…your TV time\, your social network time\, your computer\, your freedom\, your privacy\, your secret lives that no one knows about? \n\n\n\nWhat would an objective witness say about what you really are living for which demonstrates what you love. \n\n\n\nThe Bible is clear that Christians are to be marked by love\, but love is a verb that can have many objects\, even from the Bible.  Love God.  Love your wife…husband.  Love your children.  Love one another.  Love your neighbors.  Even love your enemies.   \n\n\n\nBut John confronts us in this passage with what we should NOT love.  We are not to love the world. \n\n\n\nOur passage is I John 2:15-17 and the apostle hits us all right in the face about our spiritual condition that is always marked by what we love and what we DON’T love. \n\n\n\nSo I ask you again…What do you love?  Do you love the world?  Your first response might not be the real one.  Come Sunday and you will find out what I mean.

DESCRIPTION:Pastor Don Elliott \n10:00 am @ Freddy T’s \nBASIC CHRISTIANITY\n\nMaybe the most basic thing about Christianity is that we are sinners.  The Apostle John confronts this distressing truth at the very beginning of his first epistle and it confronts us with some truths that must be faced if we call ourselves Christians.\n\nMatthew Henry\, a Puritan pastor who wrote a commentary on the whole Bible\, wrote this about this passage on sin:\n\n“The Christian religion is the religion of sinners…The Christian life is a life of continued repentance\, humiliation for and mortification of sin\, of continual faith in thankfulness for and love to the (Savior) and hopeful joyful expectation of a day of glorious redemption in which the believer shall be fully and finally acquitted and sin abolished forever.”\n\nThe old Apostle helps us understand “sinners and the Savior” in our passage this week.\n\nI love the way John begins this second chapter:  “My dear children…”  This\ns so John!!  Throughout this epistle\, he uses terms of endearment for his readers:  “little children\,” “children\,” and “beloved.” What I find so powerful about this is that he uses terms that Jesus used for his disciples.\n\nJohn 13:33 (in the Upper Room after he had washed the disciples’ feet)\n“My children\, l will be with you only a little longer…\nWhere I am going\, you cannot come.”\n\nSo John\, the 90 year old original and last apostle\, uses the same term of endearment for his disciples.  John was expressing here his pastor’s heart that he first saw in Jesus.\n\nSo John pastorally and lovingly deals with matters he considers most important to disciples and worthy to be considered part of Basic Christianity He wants to be clear about sin and the Savior.\n\nJohn will teach us all some things about sin that maybe we don’t easily see and then he will teach us three names for Jesus that uphold the Savior as the only one who could save sinners.\n
