SUMMARY:Sunday Worship & the Word
DESCRIPTION:TIME TO LEAVE MARRIAGE AND GO TO THE FAMILY\n \nFor the past month we have been looking at the most important passages in the Bible about marriage\, and that included a passage on divorce.\nBut this week we will begin a two week study of the family.\n\nThink about it…the Bible is full of families.  In the Old Testament they are called tribes\, but a tribe is only an extended family.  Genealogies are throughout the Bible\, even one that begins the New Testament with the genealogy of Jesus.  But what is a genealogy?  It is the listing of one’s blood line with all the fathers for hundreds of years.  And you throw in the multiple stores about babies and the impact of generation after generation following the Lord.  Even all the teachings of the covenant are related to how God works…He works through families…fathers\, mothers\, children\, uncles\, aunts\, nieces\, nephews…even in-laws!!\n\nBut this Sunday we will focus on Deuteronomy 6 where Moses gives instruction to the families of Israel about how they are to be faithful to their God.\n\nThat is what a godly family will do…be faithful to their God.  It does not always happen.  But when it does a powerful weapon for the kingdom of God is released.\n\nSo come to church this Sunday and get ready to get all of the ingredients of a godly family.  Some you already know.  Some will surprise you.

SUMMARY:Sunday Worship & the Word
DESCRIPTION:I DON’T WANT TO DO IT\, BUT HERE WE GO…\n\nDIVORCE…what does Jesus say?\n\nIn our Focusing on the Family for the past few weeks\, we have been looking at the primary passages in the Bible about marriage. But before we turn the corner and look at some passages about the family\, we must look at marriage one more time.  This has to do with the dissolving of a marriage…divorce.\n\nWe may think that divorce is only an American\, contemporary\, western civilization problem. That is easy to think because we all have been impacted by divorce…either our own or someone close to us. And we all know how painful and traumatic it is.  Not only do marriages split up\, children are torn\, families become dysfunctional; but churches wonder what to do about it.\n\nYes\, churches wonder what to do about it.\nSome churches get hyperactive and condemn every divorce.  Some churches get hyperactive and celebrate every divorce.  Most churches just go silent.\n\nI understand the “most churches just go silent” stance.\nEvery divorce situation is unique. We want to love both parties\, but both parties have their own stories.  We want to uphold a strong biblical stance on marriage\, but both parties have their own stories. So\, a church will not talk about divorce because it is caught between a rock and a hard place. The rock is the church wants to love both parties and tell them\, “Everything is going to be OK.  We know you are going through a hard time. You must do what you think is best for you.” The hard place is the church wants to uphold a strong biblical stance on marriage and tell them\, “Divorce is a sin. Wives\, you need to submit to your husbands. Husbands\, you need to love your wives. Repent.”\n\nSo being caught between a rock and a hard place on divorce in the church results in silence. No preaching and teaching about divorce. No personal counseling of marriages in trouble.\nNo challenging of bad\, status quo marriages. No intervention with affairs\, drug addiction\, alcoholism\, and abuse.\nJust silence from the church.\n\nWell\, it is time for us to hear what Jesus has to say about divorce.  And that is exactly what will happen Sunday.\n\nPray for me that I would be faithful to the Scriptures and pastoral to divorce situations.  Pray for divorces that you know of that the peace of God would be experienced.  And\, most of all\, pray for your marriage and the marriages of those you love.  Pray for the deliverance of marriages from the flesh\, the world and the devil.\n\nLet’s all listen to Jesus this week and hear (and put into practice) what he teaches about divorce.

SUMMARY:Sunday Worship & the Word
DESCRIPTION:TIME TO MEDDLE WITH MARRIAGES \nYep\, that is what I am going to do for the next two Sundays:  meddle with marriages. \nI will do that by looking at the commands given to wives and husbands in Ephesians 5:  wives\, be submissive to your husbands…husbands\, loves your wives… \nThey sound like fighting words to me?  Wives\, when you hear the command “be submissive to your husbands” what is your first reaction? \nHusbands\, when you hear the command “love your wives” what is your first reaction? \nSee what I mean?  Fighting words.  These commands will bring out denial (“I am already doing that.  Do you doubt I am already doing that?”) or dread (“I know\, I know.  I have tried everything.”) or defensiveness (“You don’t know my husband (wife).” or defeat\n(“I can’t do it any longer.   I have tried my best.  I give up.”) \nSo we all need to reexamine these commands.  I will not meddle with anyone’s marriage\, but I will be encouraging each partner in a marriage to meddle with their own part in their marriage.  And I will start with wives looking at themselves and husbands looking at themselves in the light of a command from Scripture. \nMany marriages are in a vicious cycle of wives complaining about their husbands and husbands complaining about their wives.  Round and round we go. \nTo break that destructive cycle\, each wife and each husband must first start with looking at themselves and examine themselves before God with God’s Word as the standard. \nSo fasten your seat belts\, put on your helmets\, take your Dramamine\, make sure your life insurance is paid up…let the meddling with marriages begin…this Sunday.
