DESCRIPTION:TIME TO LEAVE MARRIAGE AND GO TO THE FAMILY\n \nFor the past month we have been looking at the most important passages in the Bible about marriage\, and that included a passage on divorce.\nBut this week we will begin a two week study of the family.\n\nThink about it…the Bible is full of families.  In the Old Testament they are called tribes\, but a tribe is only an extended family.  Genealogies are throughout the Bible\, even one that begins the New Testament with the genealogy of Jesus.  But what is a genealogy?  It is the listing of one’s blood line with all the fathers for hundreds of years.  And you throw in the multiple stores about babies and the impact of generation after generation following the Lord.  Even all the teachings of the covenant are related to how God works…He works through families…fathers\, mothers\, children\, uncles\, aunts\, nieces\, nephews…even in-laws!!\n\nBut this Sunday we will focus on Deuteronomy 6 where Moses gives instruction to the families of Israel about how they are to be faithful to their God.\n\nThat is what a godly family will do…be faithful to their God.  It does not always happen.  But when it does a powerful weapon for the kingdom of God is released.\n\nSo come to church this Sunday and get ready to get all of the ingredients of a godly family.  Some you already know.  Some will surprise you.

DESCRIPTION:I DON’T WANT TO DO IT\, BUT HERE WE GO…\n\nDIVORCE…what does Jesus say?\n\nIn our Focusing on the Family for the past few weeks\, we have been looking at the primary passages in the Bible about marriage. But before we turn the corner and look at some passages about the family\, we must look at marriage one more time.  This has to do with the dissolving of a marriage…divorce.\n\nWe may think that divorce is only an American\, contemporary\, western civilization problem. That is easy to think because we all have been impacted by divorce…either our own or someone close to us. And we all know how painful and traumatic it is.  Not only do marriages split up\, children are torn\, families become dysfunctional; but churches wonder what to do about it.\n\nYes\, churches wonder what to do about it.\nSome churches get hyperactive and condemn every divorce.  Some churches get hyperactive and celebrate every divorce.  Most churches just go silent.\n\nI understand the “most churches just go silent” stance.\nEvery divorce situation is unique. We want to love both parties\, but both parties have their own stories.  We want to uphold a strong biblical stance on marriage\, but both parties have their own stories. So\, a church will not talk about divorce because it is caught between a rock and a hard place. The rock is the church wants to love both parties and tell them\, “Everything is going to be OK.  We know you are going through a hard time. You must do what you think is best for you.” The hard place is the church wants to uphold a strong biblical stance on marriage and tell them\, “Divorce is a sin. Wives\, you need to submit to your husbands. Husbands\, you need to love your wives. Repent.”\n\nSo being caught between a rock and a hard place on divorce in the church results in silence. No preaching and teaching about divorce. No personal counseling of marriages in trouble.\nNo challenging of bad\, status quo marriages. No intervention with affairs\, drug addiction\, alcoholism\, and abuse.\nJust silence from the church.\n\nWell\, it is time for us to hear what Jesus has to say about divorce.  And that is exactly what will happen Sunday.\n\nPray for me that I would be faithful to the Scriptures and pastoral to divorce situations.  Pray for divorces that you know of that the peace of God would be experienced.  And\, most of all\, pray for your marriage and the marriages of those you love.  Pray for the deliverance of marriages from the flesh\, the world and the devil.\n\nLet’s all listen to Jesus this week and hear (and put into practice) what he teaches about divorce.

DESCRIPTION:THE FIRST MARRIED COUPLE \nLet me start with an emphatic statement:\nI believe there was an Adam and an Eve. \nThink about this with me. It will stretch your mind and test your faith. There is no scientific evidence I can point to.  There is no personal experience I can share. There are questions galore that I cannot answer. The existence of the first man and the first woman is not found anywhere else but the Bible. The narrative of God’s creation of all things\nand of the first humans ring with the authorship problem\nof “who knew this???” and “who says??” \nWell\, this is one place I can stand and say\,\n“I believe it because God said it.” \nI know…I know…no one saw it firsthand and there were no cameras rolling.  But isn’t that what faith is?\n“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.  By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command\, so that what is seen\nwas not made out of what was visible.”\n(Hebrews 11:1 – 3) \nSo\, by faith I say again…\nI believe there was an Adam and an Eve. \nBut this Sunday I will take that another step:\nI believe that Adam and Eve were the first married couple. \nWe are in our “Focused on the Family” series and in\nspeaking about marriage there is so much to learn\nfrom the first married couple. \nCome to Grace Chapel this Sunday (or watch our livestream on our Facebook page) and let’s start from scratch.\nBTW\, why don’t you tell one other married couple this week about our “Focused on the Family” series and invite them to come or watch us. DESCRIPTION:FOCUSED ON THE FAMILY\n\nWhat is the most foundational verse in the Bible on marriage?  Well\, it is a rare verse.\nIt occurs verbatim in three place in the Scripture:\nGenesis\, Matthew and I Corinthians.  That is rare.\nJohn 3:16 occurs once.  Philippians 4:13 occurs once.\nPsalm 23 occurs once.  Genesis 1:1 occurs once.\nThe verse that is the Lord’s declaration about marriage occurs THREE times!!  And those three times are at creation\, the ministry of Jesus\, and the early church.  In other words\, it is a verse that bridges the entire Bible.  It is not seasonal\, temporary\, or cultural.\nIt is not only Old Testament or only New Testament.\nIt has nothing to do with salvation\, but it is for the saved.\nIt is the standard for marriage in the Bible\,\nyet in the Bible it was broken over and over again.\n\nThis verse is where everything else that is to be said about marriage from a biblical viewpoint must begin.\nIn the seemingly limitless expressions of marriage in our day\,\nit is the definitively limited ideal of God for marriage in all ages.\n\nSo what is this verse?\nCome to church (or tune in LIVE on our Facebook page)\nand find out.

DESCRIPTION:FOCUSED ON THE FAMILY\n\nThis coming Sunday I will begin preaching for some weeks on marriage and the family.\n\nBut I must admit some apprehension and nervousness.  I am concerned\, not because of the lack of information from the Scripture about marriage and family\, but because it is just at the point of our marriages and our families that many of us are struggling and all of us have or will struggle.  It is just at the point of our marriages and our families that we are experiencing the pressure of the culture around us\, the temptation of the Enemy near us\, and the weakness of the flesh within us. \n\nIt is also at the intersection of our individual lives with our marriages and our families that many of us feel frustrated and we have experienced some failure.  We have tensions in our marriages\, and divorce is considered the answer.  We worry about the direction of our children\, and we\, as parents\, passively sit back biting our fingernails. \n\nNevertheless I am convinced that it is time…it is time for us to grow as disciples\, not only in our personal relationship with the Lord\, but in our familial relationships the Lord has given us.  Being a disciple is not just about me and me alone.  It is about me and my wife\, me and my husband\, me and my children\, me and my parents\, me and my family.\n\nAnd it is just right there that the Lord has a word for us…a hard word.  It is hard because we have taken many wrong steps in regard to our marriages and families.  It is hard because we are afraid things have gone too far\, or are too bad\, or the situation is impossible…even for God!!\n\nIf there is one thing we all need in our Christian faithfulness to our marriages and our families\, it is that God is for us\, not against us.  He is more concerned for our marriages and our families than we are.  We need to trust Him.  We need to depend on His grace.  We need to receive the power by the Spirit that is so needed.\n\nSo let’s begin this Sunday a journey…a journey deeper in our walk with the Lord and a journey closer in our walk with those we love the most.
