NEAR THE CROSS
The cross is so central to our faith as Christians. It is a universal symbol of the heart of our faith knowing that it was upon the cross that Jesus died for our sins.
But as we go back to that original cross, there are many stories that surrounded it…and not all of them are good stories.
In the weeks ahead I will be preaching on the gospel accounts of different people who were “near the cross.” This week it will be Pontius Pilate.
The passage we will study is Matthew 27:11 – 26.
It might be more accurate to say that Pontius Pilate “caused” the cross rather than he was “near” the cross.
The Apostles’ Creed, that has been used by Christians since the 3rd century in worship and instruction, affirms that Jesus “…suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried.” Why has it been so important for Christians for centuries to remember that Jesus “suffered under Pontius Pilate”?
This is what we will discover this coming Sunday, and we will find out that there is something about Pontius Pilate that can make a difference in our walk with Christ.
See you Sunday.
